Take out some time to get acquainted with Clearwater, FL based hard rock trio The Time Framed. The band have an intense, melodic edge to their music that can't be adequately contained, and all members have this innate ability to take things in stride, and make the listener part of the act with dazzling musical abilities, and a strong musical progression that will keep you listening all the way throughout. The band was nice enough to take some time out to reveal some details as to how they got started, their musical influences, their experiences recording together, and where they see themselves going forward. Here is the transcript from our interview:
Give us your names and roles in the band?
Jeremy Benjamin - Vocals/Guitar/Pedalboard
Britt Kay - Bass
Brandon Chauncey - Drums/Backing Vocals
Take us behind the formation of the group and how you all met?
The Time Framed formed due to Jeremy wanting to put his catalog of songs to use. Britt and Jeremy met in a different project and moved into The Time Framed together as Britt was learning bass guitar as music therapy for domestic violence. We met Brandon through another member that joined earlier this year. He was standing in on drums since the current drummer was learning how to play (Jeremy has a habit of teaching people to play instruments to fit best with the music). The other members left for other projects and we loved Brandon so much, and he already felt like part of the family, that we wanted him to stay. He’s a musical genius and gets how we want the music to go, not to mention he throws in amazing ideas, he’s a perfect fit for us and the band feels solid now.
Describe your musical influences that really made you want to get into music?
Like most bands, we take influence from our pasts, presents, and futures. We pull from experiences that are relatable to our listeners. What probably makes us a bit different is that we also write our songs from dreams we have, conspiracy theories, and from tarot card readings. I think wanting to express these strange ideas and create a connection with people through playing these songs is really what got us into making the kind of music we do.
What were some influential British groups that really helped shape or hone your sound?
There are all kinds of bands that have shaped the kind of sound we’re going for. To name a few, I’d have to say we get told often that we remind people of bands like Bush, Pink Floyd, The Cure, and have even been compared to Siouxsie & the Banshees.
What is the creative process like for you guys, does it remain constant or does it change and evolve each time?
We have an interesting creative process of having jam sessions to grab ideas. Usually lyrics are floating around already, most likely due to tarot cards we have laying out, and then we just have jam sessions in which we try to get as weird as possible. When we practice, we record everything and pull out anything that we like to create new songs. I think overall our creative process involves the same ideas to use but we change which idea we use for different songs. It all just depends on how the mood feels at the time.
Let's go behind the recording of your new release and what the whole process was like for the each of you?
We actually had a lot of fun with recording Chrono Dementia. It’s an easier process when one of the members of the band is the sound engineer. Brandon recorded, mixed and mastered everything and since he’s our drummer, he already saw the vision we wanted and came up with some really fun ideas, such as backmasking guitar solos and adding new layers and sound. Of course, with any recording process, there were times when we questioned if the songs we picked to record were going to work or sounded consistent with the other songs, but if things didn’t feel right, we scrapped it and went with something else. It also keeps work easier that Jeremy, our vocalist/guitarist, has already planned out the next 5 or so EPs, so some of the hard work is already complete.
Any new bands or new songs you've been listening to lately that you've been really digging?
Since I, Britt (bassist), am a big fan of A Perfect Circle and Ten Years, I’ve really been getting into a band called Stellar Circuits. They sound a lot like a mix of APC and Ten Years, so they’re right up my alley. Other than that, we’ve been listening a lot to newer Nothing More songs, Physics House Band, Circa Survive, Sparrows, and Chon.
What's next on the agenda for you guys, and could we expect any more shows in the not too distant future?
We’ve got a few shows around Florida coming up, one in Tampa at the Brass Mug on Nov. 3rd, DeLand Music Festival on Nov. 4th, and St. Petersburg at Lucky You Tattoo on Nov. 24th. We look forward to start recording the next EP, film a music video, and keep up our marketing efforts.
Lastly, what would you like fans to know about you?
Considering our various levels of ADD, we couldn’t pick a general genre to stick to as we like all kinds of different music, playing and listening. We also wanted to avoid the notion of “sounding like band x” and try to find ways to stick out from the crowd. Using a lot of guitar effects, melodic bass, and progressive drumming, we wanted to go for a theatrical video game sound with music theory concepts and see how far we could push those boundaries.
