Spend some time getting to know Tampa, FL based Shattered. The metal outfit have gained a reputation for being a loud, abrasive band that has a strong musical self-esteem of who they are and where they want to take their music moving forward. Lead vocalist Fred Verett was nice enough to take some time out to talk about the band's origins, their musical influences, their creative process, and the recording of their forthcoming release "Skinwalker". Here is the transcript from our interview:
Give us your name and your roles in the band?
I'm Fred lead vocals, Tony is rhythm guitar, Jon on bass, Shawn splitting them skins on drums and our newest member Jay on lead guitar and together we form Voltron...I mean Shattered.
Take us behind the formation of the group and how you all met?
Shattered was formed in Tampa Bay, FL by musicians from various bands to form some unique metal. We all met in our local scene playing shows together.
Describe your early musical influences and how they have helped shape and inspire you to this day?
I'd say some early influences for us were Misfits, King Diamond, Cannibal Corpse, early Sepultura, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Imperial Conquest, and Led By Serpents!
How would you describe your band's sound to those who aren't familiar with you?
Our sound is a hybrid Of Death metal, black metal with some killer groove that makes you wanna break your neck and stomp!
What is the energy and joy you get out of playing and recording music, how big of a rush do you feel?
There is really nothing else like it! It's a huge release of all of our aggressive energy.
Talk about the recording of your upcoming release "Skinwalker", and what it was like to put it all together?
Our latest release "Skinwalker" is still in the writing stages, but it is flowing organically, and with the new addition to the band a whole new life is being injected into this recording. I know the fans will be excited about this one.
Besides music, what do you like to do in your spare time?
My spare time is usually spent expanding my skull collection and reading H.P. Lovecraft.
What's coming up next for you, any future shows or new music you'd like to promote?
Right now we are on break from taking the stage, so we can focus on getting our new full length album "Skinwalker" recorded. We will be back this summer for a U.S. Tour, and late December jumping on with some big name acts that I cannot reveal at the moment, but I promise it'll be worth the wait!
How can fans find out more info about you online?
Lastly, what is the one thing you enjoy the most about being in a band together?
I enjoy the fact that our band is a true brotherhood, and everyone is always on the same page. Being able to write some amazing original music that I love to play and listen to is always the biggest positive experience when we step in to that studio and tear the roof off!
